Social Studies

Our focus for this year will be studying the history of Massacusetts, but first we'll begin with some geography. We'll review the location of the world's continents and oceans. We'll talk about the equator, the prime meridian, and the directions on a compass. We'll then focus on the location of our country, state and town. From here, we'll go on to explore in greater depth the geography of Massachusetts.

Welcome to Lynn McMurry's web page!

school

My name is Mrs. McMurry and I am very excited about being your new teacher. Third grade is a wonderful year, and I am looking forward to sharing many interesting, exciting and enriching experiences with you!
I can't wait to get to know you and I thought you might like to know a few things about me. I grew up in New Jersey and went to college at Penn State University. I've taught all different kinds of classes from preschool through junior high, in New Jersey, California, Maryland, and for the past few years in Massachusetts. I think I might like teaching third grade in Massachusetts the best! My home is close to the Reeves School, and I'm very lucky to have another house in New Hampshire that we're working on "fixing up". That house is just barely livable, but the yard is amazing with lots of fields, trees and animals!
I live with Mr. McMurry who is a scientist, Reid McMurry who is a senior in high school and a big time runner, and Cooper who is a 2 year old generally wonderful dog. I have another son, Jonathan, who is a senior at Carleton College in Minnesota where he is studying chemistry. There are many things I love to do, and here are just a few of the things I'm interested in-reading, running, biking, hiking, camping, gardening, traveling, cooking, sewing, playing games and learning new facts and ideas about just about anything.
I'm eager to meet you and to find out about all the things you love to do and are interested in learning. Keep reading this web page to get some idea of the things we'll be studying as school begins.

Math

This year all of Woburn will be working in a new math series so you will have a brand new math book waiting for you! We start off by learning to read, write, identify and represent whole numbers 999,999! Once we catch on to that, we'll work on adding and subtracting whole numbers as well as money amounts. We'll even work on writing our own addtion and subtraction word problems.
This means we'll need to review those basic addition and subtraction facts that you learned last year in second grade. In third grade, you want to be able to play with numbers in your head, so you need to add and subtract easily and quickly. We'll review the rules, play lots of games, practice with some computer programs and time ourselves until we're speedier and more accurate than lots of grown ups!

Reading

funnel for books

Our first unit in this year's reading book is called "Finding My Place" and it's about how friends and family help us grow. There are five different stories in this unit and we'll read one each week. These stories are great fun and they'll introduce us to interesting characters, unusual settings and intriguing plots. In addition, these stories will give us practice using some special skills that good readers use to get a complete understanding of what they've read. Along with our reading book, we'll work on reading at least one novel (chapter book) each term.

Science
We'll start our work this year studying about different types of plants. We'll read in our new books to learn vocabulary and facts. We'll also do lots of experiments where we grow and care for plants. Hopefully, we'll take a long hike over to Shaker Glen to observe and interact with the plants that live in our neighborhood!
